Code of Conduct
Hack4Change is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.
Our Standards
We expect all participants, sponsors, mentors, judges, volunteers, and organizers to:
- Be respectful and considerate in speech and actions
- Communicate professionally and constructively
- Be collaborative and supportive of fellow participants
- Respect differing viewpoints and experiences
- Gracefully accept constructive criticism
- Focus on what is best for the community
- Show empathy towards other community members
Unacceptable Behavior
The following behaviors are unacceptable at Hack4Change:
- Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form
- Offensive comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, or religion
- Inappropriate physical contact or unwelcome sexual attention
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
- Sustained disruption of talks, workshops, or other event activities
- Publication of others' private information without consent
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviors
Scope
This Code of Conduct applies to:
- All Hack4Change event spaces (physical and digital)
- Official event communications (email, chat platforms)
- Social events associated with Hack4Change
- Representing Hack4Change in public spaces
Reporting
If you experience or witness unacceptable behavior:
Immediate Safety Concerns:
If you feel unsafe, contact venue security or call 911
Code of Conduct Violations:
Report to any Hack4Change organizer in person, or email contact@hack4change.ca with "Code of Conduct" in the subject line
All reports will be handled with discretion and confidentiality. We will protect the identity of reporters unless required by law.
What to include in your report:
- Your contact information (for follow-up)
- Names of any individuals involved
- Description of the incident, including date/time/location
- Whether the incident is ongoing
- Any additional context or witnesses
Enforcement
Organizers will review all reports and determine appropriate action, which may include:
- Warning the offender
- Requiring the offender to avoid the reporter
- Expulsion from the event with no refund (if applicable)
- Banning from future Civic Tech Moncton events
- Contacting venue security or local law enforcement
Our priority is the safety and comfort of all participants. We will take all reports seriously and respond promptly.
Attribution
This Code of Conduct is adapted from codes used by civic tech communities across North America, including Code for Canada and Civic Tech Toronto, which are based on the Conference Code of Conduct.
